MARCY — Looking at the seven round circles on the ultrasound screen overwhelmed Kate Gosselin.
Most people expect one baby, or maybe even twins.
But septuplets?
“Without a doubt, it was the absolute scariest thing I had seen,” Gosselin said.
On Saturday, nearly 600 people turned out at the First Assembly of God hear about that to experience from Gosselin, of the cable television reality show “Jon & Kate Plus 8.” The program airs on TLC.
Jon was not able to make the event.
Poised on a stool in an intimate stage setting, Kate spoke candidly about how she came to terms with being pregnant with what would become six babies after one of the fetuses stopped growing.
She pondered what life would be like for her, Jon and the couple’s fraternal twins, Cara and Madelyn.
And at times the thought of six car seats, six cribs and a vehicle to fit everyone was too much to bear.
Medical staff even asked her whether she and Jon would consider a reduction in the number of fetuses.
The answer was “no.”
On May 10, 2004, the sextuplets – Alexis, Aaden, Collin, Leah, Hannah and Joel – were born.
It took at least two to three years for her to accept the impact of their multiple births, she said, and it took working through feelings of anger and loneliess.
As a couple, the Gosselins endured tough times that included Jon’s losses of employment after employers decided the costs to insure his family would be too burdensome.
The peace of God and Bible scriptures pulled her through the tough times, she said, and she refused to worry.
“This was God’s plan for us, for whatever reason,” Kate said.
There were good times, too, of course. The Gosselins received an outpouring of help and support from family, friends and some businesses to help with the costs of raising six infants.
What Jon and Kate couldn’t do in their own strength, God did, Kate said.
“I learned that I am not in control,” she said. “God is.”
The Gosselins’ story continues to inspire many residents, including Marleigh Scialdone, 10, of Marcy.
Marleigh began watching the show with her mother, Deanna Scialdone.
“When my mom had cancer in Rochester, we would call and watch it over the phone,” Marleigh said.
“It was just something for us to do since we were so far apart.”
While on stage Saturday, Kate read questions submitted by audience members, including the one submitted by Marleigh.
Marleigh waited in line for Kate to sign the book, “Multiple Bles8ings: Surviving to Thriving with Twins and Sextuplets,” by Beth Carson and Jon and Kate, and she had a message to share with Kate.
“I’m going to tell her that question is from me, and that I’m really excited to meet her, and that she’s a really good role model,” she said.

Feelings of anger? At whom? The fertility doctors? God Because after all it was His plan, correct? Certainly not mad at yourselves!! Heaven forbid you take any responsibility for any of your life! And loneliness? Who the heck’s fault is that? You pushed everyone who ever tried to help or offer advice, because you, or should I say God, knew better. Lonely? Only by choice snookums!

Whoa! I am sure Jon’s employer at the time of the pregnancy is constantly thrilled to hear he let Jon go because he wasn’t willing to endure the burden of all that extra health insurance cost. When in fact, we all know the gentleman stepped forward early on to say that no, Jon simply quit showing up for work. Very responsible behavior when you are soon going to have 6 more mouths to feed and shelter. Then there is the matter of the government job that was offered to Jon AFTER the birth. Which from what the Gosselin’s have said themselves, he left to go work for Bob Carson. But of course, then he quit THAT job too. Responsibility? The name ain’t Gosselin!

HUH?? God wanted you to be angry and lonely? Why is God always picking on your Kate? Any ideas? Any at all? I am not even going here again. For lack of a better excuse for bad choices, blame it on God.

OMG! The good times are now seen as the ones where people stepped into help with the COST of raising 6 infants, 6 infants, by the way, that you committed to bringing into this world? No good times involving the kids? No fond memories of the twins and the tups all together for that first Christmas? No special memory of the first time the all slept through the night? Just the memories of everyone stepping up to YOUR plate and pitching in. Holy cow Bessie! Is she for real?

Submit your written questions for approval!?? PR firm tactics so as not to allow anyone to bring up anything that will create any semblance of the aroma of BS. I think it would be way more interesting if she did her own “Carna the Magnificent” (Johnny Carson) impersonation and answered the questions before she read them! That’s something that would actually make an interesting show in my opinion!

I hope and pray that Marleigh’s mom is doing better and is out of the hospital soon, so as to instill better role models in her daughter. Kate Gosselin is in no way a role model for anything moral and upstanding as far as I have been able to see. And before anyone says “22 minutes doesn’t show anything”………..Kate herself has said that what we see is real life.
It is all very comical to watch this play out. The lies, the back-stepping, the damage control, the fake-ness. The only problem is that Kate & by osmosis, Jon, have wittingly drug 8 little souls into the middle of it. I can only hope that the role models in that house are Little Nemo and Despereaux!

Please notice the “Prayer List” and the “Praise List”. Oh, and don’t forget to note that the ever so God fearing Gosselins finally had to buy their own 15 seat van. Please also note that even though Jon and Kate had two vehicles which easily held the 8 children between the two, Jon and Kate Gosselin did not attend church services until they got the van so they could “all travel together”. Excellent, excellent and more excellent! For that I thank you! Sometimes I get so gobsmacked over the gall of these two, that I find it hard to articulate.
And yes, lets talk role models.
Mothers, please! There are plenty of fabulous role models for your daughters, both historic and present day. Kate Gosselin, however, should NOT be one of them. As far as I can see, she has absolutely nothing to offer young girls to emulate. I would be horrified to offer Kate Gosselin as a role model of anything. Unless, of course, one is hoping to become a dysfunctional parent, human and a crook.

WOW I really enjoyed your post!!! Jon and Kate truly drive me crazy. They rarely mention God during their show. It’s so interesting how they “testify” when they are on the road. It’s unfortunate that churches still have them appear, eventually that will change.
Just a thought why is Kate a role model? She has more help than the average person. What has she done in her life? Let’s see how she handles Mady and the other 4 girls during their teenage years. Now that show I’ll watch.

As a matter of fact I addressed this issue in an entry stemming from another interview she did for a Christian publication.

I did read that entry. I don’t believe that TLC is editing out the use of God or pray in their show. I agree with everything you said in that entry. I really enjoy your blog b/c you bring up valid points about this show and this family.

OK I just looked at the archives of their website. So they continued begging for more stuff after receiving all those donations. Now Kate complained about their 1st house and now claims the 2nd house was small. Actually their 2nd house was really large and they could have renovated it. Oh well I guess they will be happy in the mansion until she finds something wrong with it.

I sure do think that Kate is trying to compete with Beth. Kate probably wishes she were Beth. Jon and Kate could have added on to the 2nd house. They had plenty of room in their backyard to do so. The kitchen in the 2nd house was big enough. How much room does one person (Kate) need in the kitchen? Kate is NEVER happy with what she has. She always wants more. Kate will find something to complain about in the mansion. I have never in my life seen someone like Kate. She never smiles, except for photos. Kate is so fake, and she has some really deep rooted problems. You can tell that Jon is not happy in that marriage. I just hope that TLC will end the show soon.

Wait until they actually have to take care of the upkeep themselves, particularly the grounds and the pool, in addition to everything else. I am sure that TLC will taking care of a lot of it while they are filming them, but once that ship sails, it should be interesting. I am not sure how much of the 23 acres is cleared, and they want to attempt to keep clear, but it looked from the aerial photos that at least 5 acres of it is . That is a lot to keep up if doing it yourself, and expensive to hire someone to do it for you.
Hubs and I have almost 11 acres here, with about 4 totally cleared. The first year we had it professionally done at mid-summer. The rest of the summer we kept up about 3 acres ourselves with our garden tractor. This past summer, I kept up about 1.5 acres, myself with a mid sized (dare I say it?) organic veggie garden on about a little less than a quarter of an acre. I mowed two paths to the pond and up kept those two paths all summer. The rest I left to meadow. This summer I am expanding my garden to about a half acre and will keep the set up the same, until we are able to afford a real tractor, which we will ultimately invest in for the expansion of our mini farm and cultivating crops and the apple orchard we are starting this summer. It is a lot to take care of and keep up, that is for sure.
Could you imagine Kate out there on a tractor, garden or otherwise?

Can you imagine Kate actually working a garden? Working being the operative word. Gardening is a lot of work. I have never gardened before last year, as a city gal, I never really had the room except for container gardening. Gardening for me is magical - I love it. But it is, without a doubt, a lot of work. Particularly if one’s goal is to eat from the garden all summer and have a solid enough harvest to can/store provisions for the winter.
I am planning this year’s garden as we speak:) I can’t wait!
BOMO and Patty Ann-Never mind that gardening is hard work, lets not forget how dirty it is! Nope nope nope Katie would never willingly get dirty, even if it did allow her to save more money on organic food than “clipping coupons” (hahahahaha) with all the money they would save on organic veggies for 10 every month, they could have a vow renewal in the tropics every year, or pay their mortgage, college funds for the kids…………YOU LISTENING KATE!

You know, if I had a television show about my children (tee hee, we know it’s really ALL about Kate and her blessed ‘clown car uterus’) and I read just ONE entry like this on the internet, I would absolutely DIE! That’s all it would take for me to call it quits. But then, God didn’t ‘bless me’ with both Borderline Personality Disorder AND schizophrenia (def: a psychotic m.i. that is characterized by a twisted view of the real world, by a greatly reduced ability to carry out one’s daily tasks, and how are you Mrs. Gosselin…).
I couldn’t resist going to the archives - bless you and thank you for the link! I didn’t stay long, as I was immediately overcome with an acute case of projectile vomiting. The very FIRST thread on the initial Gosselin website is “How Can I Help?”, a long list where Kate directs reader’s prayers for Jon, Kate, the twins, and the six unborn babies.
Directly underneath the prayer list is “How Can I Donate”, another long list that gets right to the point - $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ - and continues on to direct readers to where and what time they can drop off their money. What nerve! They not only don’t waste any time telling you to donate only money, but WHAT TIME you can give it to them.
I had a sneaking suspicion Jon and Kate’s greed and arrogance wasn’t something new that came from the ’success’ of the show; they’ve ALWAYS been this fucked up.

Unfortunately we won’t be around when the ship sails to see them have to take care of 23 acres and that big damn house all by their lonesome selves. Which would make for much more interesting viewing then what they are currently serving up.
Back in the early days of the wild, wild West families were large so there was plenty of help for milking, roping, farming, herding, hunting, gathering, fighting off hordes of wild natives.
Damn! Those kids aren’t going to get a break, TLC or not. Kate will still be able to sit in her chair ( is it teak now? ) and direct the action. Making sure that the pool is skimmed, the kitchen is polished and the laundry is done. Lift that bar, tote that bail!!

What amazes me is in the environment of investigative reporting we live in, this swill is accepted at face value and never fact-checked.
Journalistic standards should be ‘verify then print’. Not ‘print but don’t bother verifying’. Lazy reporting.
Also, if Jon’s ex-boss knows that he and his company are STILL being publicly vilified KON, he should be screaming loudly that it is a blatant lie that KON was dropped due to the health insurance costs.
What aren’t people who have been savaged by KON fighting back?

I couldn’t help going to the archives either. I have never seen anything like it. Talk about having a pity party, they had one didn’t they, and they are still having it. I think the fans need to read the part where she was hospitalized with over stimulated ovaries and went against med advice and got pregers any way. Kate has always been a master at manipulation… now that people are finding out the truth wonder what she will do?
I’m convinced that anyone who looks at Kate as a role model doesn’t watch the show with open eyes. Even if you just watch a handful of episodes, it’s blatantly obvious that Kate is seriously lacking mothering skills. How many times have we seen her complaining, yelling (at Jon or the kids), or just generally being bitchy? I don’t hold out much hope for society at large if there are really people who think Kate is a parent worthy of emulation after Gumgate, Joelgate, Cupcakegate (among other notable episodes) is beyond me. In particular, I found Gumgate *chilling*–my heart broke so completely for Collin that I wanted to reach through the screen and give him a hug, and I don’t even *like* children.
While it is not my place to tell you whom to feature, I feel strongly compelled to ask you why. The Gosselin family are very much in the public eye and have had a fair share of critisism. A lavious lifestyle, elaborate trips, new home speak of her self gratification rather than service to others. Many like myself feel they are less than genuine based on her comments and actions, all seen weekly on J&K + 8. Many comments she makes, directed toward her husband and children are very rude to say the least. I suggest the writer of this article watch some episodes, and see if she is this polarizing candidate for a Christian magazine article. Was curious if this was an actual interview and if Zondervan had it arranged?

This link seems to again contradict Kates speaking engagements. According to the article he was employed when the tups were born. Or this was another job, following Jons’ work history is “exhausting”. Guess the church stopped helping thus the Gosselin website because they agreed to help 100%.

Almost as bold as selling pictures at curches for $20.00 a pop, then after 3 years of doing that, admitting in an article (Utah, parenting)that all the money from the show goes to the kids. They must all going to be doctors, Harvard bound or they got the house as a donation. I honestly feel this last interview shows the real Jon. He was arrogant in the Triplet Connection forums, and he still is. Maybe I’m being rude here but the more they talk the less I believe. They almost confirm alot of what has been said about them.

I recall a bloggers name of NoneSoBlind - is that a blogger here, or elsewhere? Can’t remember Anyway, that’s what keeps going thru my head - None so blind as those who cannot see. I just do not get why so many people are so “in love” with Jon and Kate.
This comment about Kate: “It took at least two to three years for her to accept the impact of their multiple births,”….does this mean it took her that long to see what a huge cash cow it is to parade these kids lives on TV? OK, I get it now. (her comment).
I don’t get how reality TV lives can feel good for them as a family, and I don’t get why people of the world can’t see how sad the entire concept is!
Has anyone ever emailed a church venue to question the reason they have Kate appear, or asked the speaking fee. Lisa, that story about Jons’ employment has been spun like a top. I think they need to let that rest as that even conflicts with the facts in her book “stealing time.” Even Jon qualified this is his Utah inverview saying he lost his job, and Kate lost hers because of the pregnancy. While it might not seem to be a misrepresentation this quote seems odd in light of what Jon said in his Utah interview. Jon was not able to make the event. Assuming J&K never lie it is reasonable to expect they will NEVER appear together since they have to have one parent home at all times, per Jons’ quote. And as much as I hate to ask if Kate was in Utica for 2 days, Jon and Cara in Utah, leaves uuuuummmm which parent was home with them and who flew back with Cara, Heeellllloooooooo.
Well, Search for Truth, you ask the right questions. I can understand normal inconsistancies; but if the facts are represented, the main theme will always be consistent. Not so with the Gosselins.
And, I think you’re the one who brought this up recently, where are the people who know and respect this couple? Surely, someone would want to come forward and dispute the things that are being said and written about them. Surely someone knows they are kind and charitable and respected in their community. As a poster on ABC and GDNP likes to say: Bueller? Anyone?
Oh, and it’s pretty obvious why they speak at the venues/churches they do: their refusal to selectively reduce the pregnancy. It is in line with the views of the churches and the audience supports that belief.
Which, I’m going to say, is well within everyone’s rights. So please, not trying to start the abortion debate on Moon’s blog. Just commenting on why they speak where they speak.
Search for Truth = I don’t remember which blog I read it on, but there was a report from someone who was at the Utica engagement and they reported Kate said that since Jon had been away on a shoot (we know TLC was filming Jon and Cara in Utah) and hadn’t seen the kids for a while, he was going to stay home and spend some time with them. I think if I paid money for a ticket to see Jon & Kate, (not that I ever would), I’d be pretty annoyed if only Kate showed up. I wonder if anyone asked for half their money back?
Yeah that was exactly what I was trying to get at, if you advertise both of them and it’s obvious they will not both attend, I think some people might be upset. This is exactly where these two go wrong almost everytime, being less than honest. If they told the churches only one would attend so the other could be with the kids, I would say myself, well thats okay, unless I knew the real deal. I suspect they did not say Jon is away on a real estate transaction (vacation home) right before they pass the collection plate. You know it is not easy for me to just see the inconsistencies of the things they do. They do have an amazing story of life, infertility, and these six children and the twins arriving safe and sound as well as Kate. But Kates’ need for self gratification and her greed just overshadow any of her message for me. I honestly feel most of these people they speak to might not be viewers of the show.

Actually I think it was that Kate showed and stated that Jon could not because he and Cara were on a shoot. Jon says in his interview that Kate was at home. They should never be interviewed at the same time because Jon was clearly caught in one of his (many) lies.
Also, at that speaking engagement, the attendees stated that there were two chairs set on stage, and then only Kate walks out. While the venue stated that they were told on the Thursday prior to the speaking engagement on Saturday that Jon would not be there as he was on a shoot with Cara, someone didn’t give the stage manager the memo, because two chairs were placed - one for Jon and one for Kate.
Either the stage manager didn’t get the memo, or Kate told the venue when she showed up alone!

Last September I called a great deal of their venues, but I did not ask about speaking fees, etc. I called as a potential attendee, to ask about ticket prices, love offerings and picture sales. It is my understanding now that the PR company sets all of the speaking engagements so I am sure that they have it set up to go through the PR company. How, not sure. Perhaps the PR company sends out availability adverts to potential venues and those that are interested contact them? I don’t know.
As for who is watching the kids, probably the same one that is watching them 4-6 hours a day. I am sure a production member flew back with Cara on the plane and got her home safely. You know, doing the job that her parents are supposed to be doing as SAH parents, lol.
I am gathering some information so if it has already been said bear with me. Earlier this year there were several venues mainly churches that were cancelled by the PR firm. I cannot help to feel that they are now going back to the church venues, with higher speaking fees, in hopes that alot of these people will not be as questioning.
That “stay at home” card that is always played like the winning hand irritates me. A SAH parent is home! Taking care of the kids, helping the kids, working in the home on the home.
A working parent - like so many of us - is out during the day, away from the home. In this case, the working parent may be actually in the home but is on the phone, in the office and working on the business that supports the family.
The perception being tossed around that the parents of these kids are home playing with them 24/7 is comforting to some but an illusion, like so much of what we are seeing.
I dislike that the answer to any question about exploitaiton, shooting schedules and lifestyle choices is always answered with “the show allows them to stay at home with the kids” as the trump card. No, it doesn’t. The parents are working it and the kids are working and the result is not the fantasyland so many seem to think exists.
FX Fanatic - too funny about the chairs! Maybe she should haul around her white plastic throne for these engagements.
Moon - I was taking my info from the original post on GWOP and the entry copied on Cafe Mom “Only Kate Showed UP”. It does state that Jon had been away but was home now. Was there another recap somewhere I missed? I realize this whole post sounds petty - sorry not trying to be, I love your blog - but I just think there’s also a lot of crazies on our side of the fence who do put out nonsense and untruths about these two. I think those two numbskulls dig their own graves perfectly well without any help from anyone. I love that they have a PR firm selling interviews to any publication that’ll have them - it seems like they can’t open their mouths without saying something stoopid so that just gives the public more chances to realize what grifters they truly are.
